ABOUT DARGAH

Legend has it that when Haider Ali reconstructed the oval Bengaluru Fort in stone in 1761, the nawab was surprised that three workers slogged all day at the construction site but did not accept wages. One day , he asked the fort's killadar Ibrahim Khan to follow the trio and explain their unusual behaviour. Khan tracked them to a mosque in Kumbarpet where they apparently vanished leaving their shoes  ..
He returned with an explanation: The three, Hazrat Tipu Mastan, Hazrat Manik Mastan and Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan, were Sufis.

Instead of accepting special favours from Haider Ali, the saints asked him to build a mosque in Cottonpet. Work on the structure began in 1777 and was completed by Haider's son Tipu Sultan in 1783.

“Tawakkal Mastan's tomb in Cottonpet is considered one of the oldest and largest dargahs in Bengaluru. Hazrat Manik Mastan's
dargah is on Avenue Road and Hazrat Tipu Mastan's dargah is in Arcot,“  It is also said that Tipu Sultan was named after Hazrat Tipu Mastan.

Sufis are travelling Islamic ascetics who settled in communities far away from their own. These spiritual teachers practised multiculturalism, peace and inclusivity .They are said to have migrated to Bijapur from various places including Baghdad, Arabia, Persia and Sindh during the Adil Shahi rule in the 17th century. According to Ali, Bengaluru has between 20 and 30 dargahs located in various pockets including JC Road, KR Puram, Mysuru Road, Avenue Road and Madiwala.
